A Busy Saturday

I had planned how I should have used my Saturday since the start of the week; however, plan was changed. I was informed on Friday night that there would be a meeting to attend and a dancing session that I could ill afford to miss.

__Working for free????
__Yes, mom!

I have always wanted to engage in volunteering activities; but I had never been given a chance. I had tried twice but I was not shortlisted. But this time, I am! My mom showed an expression of dislike the sound of volunteering as she thinks it’s a waste of time. I won’t earn any cent from this but I will earn something that money itself cannot buy—Experience.

What I will learn from this event then? Well, here are things that I expect to have at the end of the activity:
·         Relationship with the other volunteers
·         The process to organize an event
·         Experience in working with different people
·         The ability to listen and to make others listen to your ideas…

I don’t expect that at the end of the day I will be given a piece of paper with my name on it certifying that I am one of the organizing team members; to me, it’s only a tool telling others you have done something, but matter are what have you actually done and what have you learnt from your work.

Plus, besides the experience itself; a volunteer will feel he/she is not a waste of space. Instead of spending time sleeping in bed, he/she volunteers, meets people and helps others in their community. This will boost their self-esteem and change the way they view the world. Volunteering also help people to step out of their comfort zone and assist them in exploring the world around them.

Let’s see what I will learn after my first volunteer, stay tune! ;)

Roim Vong, Phnom Penh Ondo and Tokyo Ondo

How I spent my whole afternoon? Well, DANCING! The first hour and a half, the dancing floor was given to a middle-aged Cambodian dancing coach who taught Khmer popular dance, Roim Vong. I had a hard time trying to follow the steps, doing the hand moves (I don’t know what it’s called in English). But after all, it was incredibly fun!

The other hour and a half, a Japanese man and a lady had the dancing floor. I have learnt Japanese dancing moves; they were amazing. They are energetic, not very complicated and easy to follow. What makes the dance more exciting is that it is new to me! I laughed along the way; and because the floor is rather for such every professional dancer-wanna-be (this is what I want to call myself, lol), sometimes we stepped on each other’s toes and hit other’s heads as in some moves we need to stretch our hands and our legs; some requires the dancers to jump.

The whole day consumed lots of my energy, but it is worth it. I enjoy today’s session and I’m looking forward to the next session.
